Welcome to Journalism Gems, where two of Mary Carey's best journalism students indulge into many of their assignments and interests. This blog will include several different articles of things such speeches, events and guests the journalism 300 students will see. Be sure to follow us for the latest journalistic news on campus.

Events

Life After UMass... Is There Such a Thing?

Ever planned on what to do once we break free of our zooish cages? If you haven't the Department of Economics, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Student Alumni Association have for you! Join the the UMass Amherst Alumni Association who are proud to present Alumni 2.0: Life After UMass. This event is a panel discussion which will take place at 5:30 pm on Oct. 26 and gives students a glimpse of where their UMass Amherst education and experiences can take them. Come and join the fun to get some answers for those confusing questions with some food and refreshments to relieve the stress of graduating college. This discussion will be open to all UMass students, faculty and staff that wish to be a part of the event.




UMass Jazz Ensemble



Directed by Felipe Salles and Thomas Giampietro, the UMass Chapel Jazz ensemble is having a concert on Thursday, December 8th at 8:00 p.m. in Stockbridge Hall's Bowker Auditorium. The concert will feature a guest trumpeter, Randy Brecker. Admission will be $3 for students, seniors and children and $10 for the general public. Come out and experience wonderful jazz music brought to you by your fellow students and expand your artistic horizons!

Avocado Week!



At all dining commons on the UMass campus it is "Avocado Week!" There are many different dishes made with this wonderful fruit. Sample the wide variety of menu choices, including turkey avocado panini, shrimp in avocado cream sauce, grilled salmon with avocado dip, watercress orange avocado salad and much more. Any student with a meal plan can participate in this dining event, so be sure to stop by. 


The Chill Out


While we are all stressed out with our final exams, the UMass University Programming Council is hosting "The Chill Out" to let all the students have access to study materials such as pens, pencils, erasers etc. There will also be refreshments to curb your hunger while pulling those long hours in the library. This event will happen at the Student Union and the off-campus student center on Friday, December 9th on the last day of classes, and the eve of finals week.
